Third Sunday of Lent

Year C

What fruits of conversion if not those of an interior freedom that is rooted in an intimate relationship with God?

Between the Father – the master – and the peasant servant – Jesus – the dialogue of our salvation is continually taking place, which requires conversion as a subtle game between urgency and patience, between patience and urgency. This work is necessary so as not to render in vain the care with which God accompanies and guides the history of humanity. Paul strongly emphasizes that the experience of the fathers is a warning to us, the book of Exodus reminds us that the revelation of the Name to Moses on Sinai is a solemn proclamation of God’s passionate and risky interest and involvement in our history. The Name revealed to Moses is a verb and not a noun: God reveals himself through his works, in a present that is rooted in the past and always dynamically opens to a future of growth in knowledge whose sign of authenticity is the expansion and deepening of freedom. It should be noted that the revelation of the Name to Moses occurs only when this servant of God has agreed to graze and take care of the flock of Jethro, of a flock not his own after the failure of his being first prince and then “executioner”. Thus the winemaker shows himself capable of taking care of a tree that does not belong to him on which he pours all his care not only freely, but also passionately. We just have to consider “the veiled and hidden reality of the parable … They are figures that contain great sacred realities. They warn us, in fact, that it is not right to despair of men, and that we must not neglect those who are in danger”. (Asterius of Amasea, Homily on Conversion ).
