Trinity

Year A

We celebrate the Trinity by invoking the name of God’s mercy, welcoming his holy kiss which already introduces us to eternal life.

Ex 34.4b-6.8-9; Canticle Dn 3,52-56; 2Cor 13.11-13; Jn 3: 16-18

We celebrate the Trinity and the readings of this solemnity offer us concrete suggestions for doing so. The Exodus reminds us of the need to invoke the name in the Lord, the name of his mercy. We cannot see his face, but we can invoke his name and contemplate the traces of mercy and forgiveness that he impresses on history. This name, St. Paul recalls, becomes a greeting: “greet each other with a holy kiss”. Holy because that kiss must communicate not only our affection, but the love of God, who has reached us, transformed us, and now we can announce it to others. The kiss is a communication of life, of love, of communion. Our kiss must be a sign of God’s holiness, of that life that comes from him, of that love that is poured out by his Spirit into our hearts. Finally, Saint John announces us to believe in the Trinitarian mystery, to dwell in his love, means to enter eternal life already. Jewish tradition, commenting on the mysterious death of Moses on Nebo, states that God kidnapped Moses with a kiss. With a kiss he snatched Moses from his life to lead him into a different life. This is the holy kiss of God for us: it snatches us from the life we already lead to introduce us into another, different quality of life, in the fullness of that love which constitutes the mystery of the Father and of the Son and of the Spirit.
