Let’s go back to listen to John’s Prologue on this Sunday, after having done it on Christmas day. The mystery of the incarnation is so surprising that it seems necessary to announce it several times, so that our unbelief may win, penetrate our conscience with truth, persuade us with its unprecedented beauty. We must make our own the prayer of Saint Paul, with which he intercedes in favor of the Ephesians, “so that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ … illuminate the eyes of your heart to make you understand what hope he has called you, what treasure of glory he contains your inheritance among the saints ». The hope to which we are called is to become children of God. This hope is also our inheritance. However, we must understand this term in the biblical meaning, different from the use we make today. It is not a question of inheriting a future good; for the Bible, inheritance is the part that God has already chosen, which belongs to him in a singular way. If we translate more literally we should say that “we have been set aside by him”. We belong to him in a unique way, as his singular property. No one has ever seen God and now the Son tells us about it. He does it not in an extrinsic way, but by making us dwell with him in the love of the Father, as a chosen portion, because it is loved.
