Easter Sunday

Mary, Peter, the Beloved Disciple, are characterized by three different ways of seeing at the tomb. Faith is born from their intertwining.

At 10.34a.37-43; Ps 117 (118); Col 3.1-4; or 1Cor 5,6-8; Jn 20: 1-9

All the characters that run to the tomb “see”. Mary sees (“blepo” in Greek): her is a bodily, physical, natural seeing; seeing with one’s own eyes. Even Peter, a little later, “sees” the sheets laid there. The verb for him is “theoreo”: a more reflective seeing, which reasons, investigates, questions itself. Finally it is the Disciple Beloved to see. “He saw and believed.” Here is now: it is seeing not only with the eyes, like Mary, or with reason, like Peter, but it is a deeper seeing, of one who knows how to dwell in love, guarding the Word. They all see the same things, the same signs. Yet their way of seeing is different. There is no question that we need all these qualities of seeing to reach authentic faith. What you see with your eyes must arouse research, it must push you to think, to question yourself, to investigate; this research, however, must also go beyond itself. It cannot remain within the horizon of a reasoning, he must return to itself in the depths of our interiority, at the deepest part of our being, where there is not only our way of reasoning, but of living with God and his Spirit, his love, offeringus a different perception of reality. Then, at the crossroads of these three verbs, faith is born: it is seen and believed.
