II Sunday of O.T.

Year C

The thing that reveals the glory of Jesus, founding our faith, is the possibility of tasting the new wine, sign of the joy that he wants to give us.

Is 62:1-5; Ps 95 (96); 1Cor 12:4-11; Jn 2:1-11

In this third year of the liturgical cycle, the so-called year C, we respect the ancient sequence that invites us to hold together the three signs that manifest the mystery of Jesus: the revelation to the Magi in Bethlehem; the revelation in baptism, at the Jordan; the revelation at Cana through the sign of water transformed into wine. The first revelation is for the distant peoples, represented by the wise men who came from the East; the second manifestation is for Israel, who rushes to the Jordan to hear the last of the prophets and receive his baptism of penance; that of Cana is the manifestation to the disciples, who see the glory of Jesus and believe in him. They believe, but what did they see? Little or nothing. If the wine fails, the mother sees it. As Jesus gives the new and better wine the servants know it, that they draw it from the amphorae that they have filled with water. Disciples believe not because they see the greatness of a sign, but because they taste the goodness and novelty of a wine they have never tasted before. What enables them to believe is to enjoy the joy that God, in Jesus, wishes to give to our life, as Isaiah announced: “you will be called My Joy and your land Married”!
