21st Sunday in Ordinary Time – year B

Life demands choices.  More than “what do we have to do” we need to choose “who we want to be” and above all “what relationships bring us life.

Josh 24:1-2a.15-17.18b; Ps 33 (34); Eph 5:21-32; Jn  6:60-69

The Word of God puts us today in front of the theme of choice. Israel, approached by Joshua, decides to serve the Lord. Jesus interrogates the Disciples if they want to leave or stay. St. Paul reminds the Ephesians of the decision by which a man leaves his father and mother to join his wife and become a single flesh with her. Life demands choices, which come to maturity with discernment. As a whole, the word of God this Sunday proposes an essential aspect of choice: more than simply’ What to do we are called to choose ‘ who we want to be ‘ and above all ‘ what relationship brings us life ‘. Israel decides to continue to serve the Lord because it knows it has been set free. A man and a woman come together by recognizing in their love a promise of life that they reciprocally exchange. All of us, in our turn, can repeat with Peter our fidelity to Jesus, recognizing in him the word that makes us live. We are confident that with him we can have a true relationship, which does not deceive, does not betray, but leads to full life, in eternal life, where relationships do not fail.
