13th Sunday of Ordinary Time – Year B

In the humanity of Jesus,
who made himself poor for us,
God shows us his face and
imprints in us his likeness,
for an incorruptible life.

Wis1:13-15; 2:23-24; Ps 29 (30); 2 Cor 8:7-9.13-15; Mk 5:21-43

To Moses who begged him to show him his glory, God had answered that he could only see ‘ from the back ‘ (cf. Es 33,18-23). Even the sick woman, of whom Mark tells us, touches Jesus from behind and is immediately healed. Jesus, however, wants to meet her personally and show her his face. He turns his face: now we can look at God not only from behind, but stare at his face that is embodied in the face of a man. Jesus does not seek the anonymous face of the crowds, but the personal one of men and women met in the secret of their name and their history. The same thing happens in Jairus’ house. Having sent the other away, Jesus remains only with a few intimates and does not just look at the maiden and talk to her; He takes her by the hand, a gesture that speaks the proximity of a God who touches our flesh, even touches our death, to return it to that incorruptible image in which we have been created, as Wisdom reminds us. To be in the image of God means that his face, looking at us, imprints his likeness. This is the true richness that Jesus gives us by being poor in the flesh of our humanity, made in his likeness, for eternal life.
