In intertwining the stories of the woman with a haemorrage and the daughter of Jairus, Marco also intertwines time. The woman had in fact “bleeding for twelve years”, while the girl was twelve when she died. The time of life (too short!) of this girl corresponds to the time (too long!) of the woman’s illness. How long and interminable is the time of suffering; how short, unstoppable, the time of life! Yet in both cases it is “twelve years”. Time, however, is not only constituted by the passing of hours, days of years … but by the perception we have of it. And it is different: it seems to us that the time of suffering never ends, while the time of life and joy is always too short. Jesus – Mark proclaims – nevertheless makes himself present in our human time and transfigures it. Thanks to his presence, time becomes a space for personal encounter. Jesus wants to see the face, and shows his face to the woman who touches him from behind. He takes the girl by the hand and speaks to her personally. He transfigures our time, and gives us life, in an encounter that makes us similar to him. As Paul writes, in order to meet us he stripped himself of his wealth, and enriched us with his poverty. With that poverty that strips us in turn to allow us to meet him and really know him, becoming similar to him!
